Do you Know Aunt Bruce

I love Reading Aunt Bruce... Here is one of my Favs

The first thing I saw on Logo was a commercial about genital herpes. But I get ahead of myself I came to Logo, which is Viacom's new channel programmed to the gay and lesbian market, a bit late. Well, who wouldn't? It was difficult to tear myself away from my summer reading--Harry Potter: The Prisoner of Neverland Ranch. Talk about riveting. But sooner or later, humidity being what it is, I was going to have to go indoors, where I knew Logo was waiting. I made the popcorn, poured the vodka into the Hawaiian Punch, arranged the animals so they would not be bestirred by my bursts of joy, and sat back to enjoy gay-per-view. And on came the genital herpes commercial.

Wait a minute, had I accidentally landed on Lifetime? Damn this universal remote. A straight couple--what? were hiking through the woods, kayaking, pitching a tent, all apparently while a savage itch raced through their loins. Poor straight people. The likelihood that anyone watching a gay channel would be suffering from this particular affliction or, if they were, wanted to be reminded of it, was slimmer than a runway model.

The commercial over, the next thing I saw was Varla Jean Merman, one of the most exceptional drag performers ever she can hit a high C with a mouth full of Cheez Whiz. She was anchoring a brief, MTV-like recounting of the Stonewall riots which had a lot more color and excitement than the nots themselves. It was full of graphics and quick cuts and jokes and almost as confusing as being in the middle of a riot, but it looked fabulous and so often that's all that really counts.

Then the feature program resumed, the bleeped version of Torch Song Trilogy, the movie of Harvey Fierstein's landmark play of the early '80s, a film all about what it was like in New York before AIDS. At this point, I decided I had landed on the Gay History Channel. I hit "search" on the TiVo to find out if Abe Lincoln would be making an appearance. But soon I got all caught up in the movie, in which you get to see Matthew Broderick as chicken, which will really make you feel ancient.

The next day, after more Varla Jean and that same poor straight couple with the herpes, I got The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert also bleeped and Personal Best, the early '80s lesbian long-distance runner story that, when it was originally released, we all called Chariots of Fur. There were also a fistful of promos for the upcoming broadcast of the GLAAD Media Awards, which were made to look like the Oscars of 'mo-dom, and why not? It was something new.

Then, without warning, a whole bunch of new things began showing up. A show about gay couples planning weddings. A tour of gay Amsterdam. Scott Thompson being Scott Thompson. Suzanne Westenhoefer's stand-up. At this point, I decided to stop judging and start enjoying. Every cable channel has 24/7 to fill, and a lot of the stuff it puts on is going to feel like retread. But the fact that a straight channel-surfer out there can land on a channel that looks and sounds totally legitimate and is totally gay is an incredible leap for gaykind. And he just might be able to clear up that herpes thing besides.

Police Threaten Virginia Marriage Ban Opponents With Arrest

I wonder if law includes the Girl Scout from SELLING THEIR OVER PRICE COOKIES

(Richmond, Virginia) With less than a month until Virginia voters go to the polls to consider an amendment that would ban gay marriage, civil unions and likely domestic partner benefits canvassers going door to door urging people to vote against the measure in the town of Warrenton have been threatened with arrest.

Police officers pointed to a town ordinance meant to control door-to-door salespeople.  It does not specifically mention political campaigns, and it is believed candidates running for office have not been threatened.

It is not known if other Virginia communities have similar ordinances.

On Wednesday the ACLU of Virginia began sending out letters to police chiefs throughout the state to make them aware of the rights of political canvassers.

“Door to door canvassing for political and religious purposes is carved so deeply into the American landscape that one hardly needs to invoke the Constitution to justify it,” said ACLU of Virginia executive director Kent Willis.

“Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the Supreme Court has struck down every local ordinance that attempts to interfere with this basic First Amendment right.”

Willis said that homeowners have a right to ask canvassers to leave their property, "but homeowners should not expect the police to remove canvassers from neighborhoods just because they find their presence irritating, or they don’t like the content of their message.”

A recent Mason-Dixon poll showed that 54 percent support the amendment while 40 percent said they would vote against it

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) and former US Sen. John Edwards have voiced their opposition to the amendment. In addition a number of communities and business groups, mainly in northern Virginia have stated their opposition to the amendment - mainly over its provisions that would potentially affect domestic partner benefits.

Virginia's Republican Attorney General issued a legal opinion that the amendment would not bar private company domestic partner benefits, negate agreements between partners or affect non-married opposite-sex couples. (story)

"The passage of the Marriage Amendment will not affect current legal rights and obligations of unmarried persons involving contracts, wills, advance medical directives, shared equity agreements, employer accident and sickness insurance policies or protection under domestic violence laws," Bob McDonnell wrote.

But that opinion is not shared by some of the state's top legal minds, including Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine.

Following the release of McDonnell's opinion Gov. Kaine held a news conference to say he disagreed.

"The potential for unintended consequences is a very serious flaw," Kaine said, reminding reporters that the state already has legislation limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples.

Last month 100 noted Virginia attorneys, including two former attorneys general, issued a statement saying they believe the measure could be used to terminate all rights of unmarried couples who have entered into contracts on such things as wills and child custody. They also said that the amendment could be used to exclude unmarried couples from the state's domestic violence laws.

FOLEY OUTRAGE

That Lady Bunny has a strange outlook on life Click here to read more from Her

Pedophilia outrages almost everyone, particularly religious right-wingers who form the backbone of republican voters. When are these little old gray-haired ladies going to acknowledge the widespread, very un-christian corruption within their sworn political party, with whom they're alligned so closely that preachers in the last presidential election testified that a vote for John Kerry was a vote for the devil? Again and again, as someone wrote into CNN, the GOP sends the message "Do as we say, not as we do." Do you really think that ads urging Bush to help stop the murder in Darfur are going to help? You're appealing to a killer's non-existent conscience to stop killing in a country which has no oil? Puhlease! Recognize the republican beast for what it is. Will this flap over the page still "resonate"--ie pentrate and remain in their backward skulls--with conservative, bible-thumping voters in November?
